Tyre Information & FAQs

How competitive are your prices?

At RAC Tyres we work hard to ensure we offer the very best price and have selected the following retail brands for you to compare against. Our fully fitted price is all inclusive of valves, fitting and balancing - some retailers add these charges later on in your order so sometimes cheap tyres are not as cheap as they first appear. When comparing tyre prices we recommend checking that your quote is all inclusive.

When should I replace my tyres?

Car tyres must have a minimum tread depth of at 1.6mm across three quarters of the width of the tread and the full circumference of the tyre. However a tyres braking performance will vary before it reaches the legal limit, especially in wet conditions. We recommend that tyres are changed when the tread depth is between 2mm and 3mm.

How do I check my tyres tread depth?

A large number of tyres include tread wear indicators in the tyre groove. These mouldings are raised 1.6mm above the base of the tread groove so that when the adjacent tread has worn down to this level it indicates the tyre should be changed. Another method is to use a 10 pence coin.

Place the coin in the tread and check whether the dots around the side are visible. If they are you should replace the tyre. (Note: using a coin is only a rough guide, if you are unsure of your tread depth we recommend using a tread gauge or consulting your local garage)

How often should I check my tyres?

Ideally you should check your tyre pressures and tread depth every two weeks and before any long journeys. Not only can incorrect tyre pressures impact a vehicle's handling but can also increase fuel consumption.
